To celebrate and explore the deep cultural ties between Qatar and Indonesia, the Years of Culture initiative will bring traditional Indonesian arts and crafts workshops to various locations in Doha this September in partnership with M7 and Liwan Design Studios and Labs.
The workshops have been designed by the Years of Culture team in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research of the Republic of Indonesia and Indonesian artisans and experts in ceramics, puppet-making, dance, and batik-making.
WORKSHOPS
Years of Culture presents Wayang Suket Puppet-Making Workshop
Part of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture September event series, Indonesian Workshop Month will showcase Indonesian culture here in Qatar.
During this immersive workshop at Liwan, participants will learn about the unique Javanese tradition of Wayang Suket, or "straw puppets”. The puppet-making workshop will begin with an introduction to the history, forms, characters, and philosophy of Wayang Suket.
Participants will then be guided step-by-step to make their own Wayang Suket puppets before taking part in a small live performance alongside the facilitators.

Years of Culture presents the Indonesian Batik Workshop (Simple workshop)
This series of creative Indonesian Batik workshops at M7 is perfect for families looking for activities and things to do in Qatar in September.
In this session, participants will be introduced to the Indonesian art of Batik in a practical way, learning how to design a unique pattern with wax. Each guest will create a colorful design and take home their very own piece of material. Hosted by Years of Culture in collaboration with Qatar Creates.

Years of Culture presents Indonesian Batik with Natural Dyes Workshop
As part of Indonesian Workshop Month in Qatar this September, Years of Culture invites you to discover the traditional Indonesian art of Batik at one of our upcoming events in Doha.
The workshop at the Museum of Islamic Art will begin with an introduction to the techniques used in Batik, with participants learning how to design a unique pattern using wax.
Then, handmade natural dyes will be applied to color the material and complete the Batik effect. At the end of the workshop, every guest will be able to take their custom-designed, shawl-sized material home.

Years of Culture presents Indonesian Ceramics Workshop
As part of the Indonesian Workshop Month events in Qatar, Years of Culture is hosting a series of Indonesian Ceramics workshops at Liwan this September.
Discover the beautiful art of Batik glazing and other traditional ceramic techniques from Indonesia, at this hands-on workshop in Doha.
Participants will learn about Indonesian pottery and get to try a range of Batik glazing processes, with all of the materials needed to create their very own ceramic piece. Each person will get to take home the piece they made during this exciting creative workshop in Qatar.

Years of Culture presents Tari Merak Indonesian Dance Workshop
Part of the Years of Culture Indonesian Workshop Month, this dance workshop will give women in Qatar the opportunity to discover the Indonesian art form of Tari Merak, a traditional dance from West Java.
This female-only workshop at the Museum of Islamic Art will begin with a demonstration of the Tari Merak dance (also known as the Peacock Dance), followed by an explanation of its history and the philosophy behind it.
Participants will then get to interpret the dance themselves, learning a guided choreography of dance movements. No prior dance knowledge is required, and all levels are welcome at this workshop in Doha. Participants are advised to wear comfortable gym clothes.
