Meetup With a Qatari Author: Eissa Abdullah

In this meetup, QNL will be chatting with Qatari author Eissa Abdullah. QNL will discuss his experience as an author in Qatar, his most popular books and his upcoming book release. They will talk about the success of Dar Roza in publishing Qatari authors.

Educational Pioneers in Qatar: Highlights on Education Milestones During 1890-1957

The Heritage Library, in cooperation with the Wijdan Cultural Center, is organizing a virtual lecture entitled Pioneers of Education in the State of Qatar: Highlights on Education Milestones During 1890-1957.

The lecture, delivered by Khaled Al-Maadid, Deputy Director General of Wijdan Center and moderted by Ikhlas Ahmed, Tours and Exhibitions Officer at the Heritage Library, will highlight important milestones in building the education system in the State of Qatar during different periods before and after the discovery of oil.

The lecture will outline the importance of non-official education schools, highlighting the names of pioneers of the most famous Katateeb (community centers for teaching Quran and basic Islamic studies) since the era of Sheikh Jassim bin Muhammad Al Thani (Founder of the State of Qatar), and expounding their role in spreading education among the people of Qatar up to the semi-formal education stage and establishing the first school for boys and girls.

Children’s Writing Challenge: Qatar Before You Were Born

For this writing challenge, children ages 9 to 12 can write a story of 300 to 500 words on the theme "Qatar in a time before you were born." It can be fact or fiction, but stories must be set in Qatar and should include some or all of these elements: imaginative ideas, memorable characters and an exciting plot.

We will select three stories to be shared on the Library’s social media channels!

Enter your story by sending it to [email protected] before 21 December 2020. Children with special needs may participate by including the phrase “special challenge” in the submission.

Challenge Terms:

  • We will accept the first 100 entries, and the priority is for the first 50 participants in each language who submit their work before the closing date.
  • The child must write his/her name, age and hobbies along with the submission.
  • The story can be fact or fiction, but it must be set in Qatar.
  • The word count is between 300 and 500 words.
  • The submitted story should be written in a Word document.
  • who submit their work before the closing date.
  • The competition is open to children ages 9 to 12.
  • The writing pieces should be sent to [email protected]

Terms for the Special Challenge:

Children with special needs can participate in this challenge under the following terms:

  • There will be 30 total participants.
  • Write the child's name, age and school stage, and add the phrase "special challenge" to the child’s information so it will be evaluated separately.
  • Participants can draw the story’s events without being restricted by a word count so that the drawing is inspired by the child's imagination and commensurate with the visual prompt.
  • The story must be drawn on unlined A4 paper and not exceed two pages.
  • Send a clear scan of the child's work to [email protected]
  • Entries must be submitted before the closing date of the challenge.

Challenge Timeline:

  • Challenge starts on 10 December 2020.
  • Submissions will be accepted starting on 15 December.
  • The deadline is 21 December.
  • Beginning 12 January, we will announce the top three writers on the Library's social media channels and feature their stories with their bios. For special needs challenge, the top 3 winners will be announced and their drawings will be also featured on social media.

The winners will be featured on Instagram @QNL_children.

Enter your story by sending it to [email protected] before 21 December 2020. Please include the participant’s name, age and school stage with the submission.

We will select three stories in Arabic and three stories in English to be shared on the Library’s social media channels!

  • There will be 50 total entries, and the priority is for the first 25 participants in each language (English and Arabic) who submit their work before the closing date.
  • The participant must write his/her name, age and hobbies along with the submission.
  • The story can be based on true events or fiction, but it must be set in Qatar.
  • The word count is between 500 and 600 words.
  • The submitted story should be written in a Word document.
  • The competition is open to young adults ages 13 to 18.

Robot Showcase: Traditional Dance

As we celebrate the Qatar National Day, the Library, in collaboration with Hamad Bin Abdullah bin Jasim Secondary School, invites you to watch a programming-based robot perform the Ardah dance. Ardah, a folkoric dance, is performed by a group of individuals facing one another, accompanied by drums or spoken poetry.

The History of Qatar in Maps

Qatar has been a known place on European maps for around 2,000 years and was even represented as a peninsula on some 16th-century maps, but then disappeared completely as a peninsula for over 200 years until it reemerged in the early 19th century. This talk will discuss this history and how many of these maps can provide us information about the history of Qatar that is not available to us from other sources.

The lecture will be presented by Christopher A. Alario, Information Services Librarian in the Heritage Library.
