The “endless war” in Afghanistan is entering a crucial phase. The U.S. government has started direct negotiations with Taliban leadership to end the conflict, after engaging in a series of diplomatic and confidence-building measures involving the Afghan and Pakistani governments, Afghan political factions, and other regional and international partners. On January 28, after nearly a week of talks in Doha, it was announced that the United States and the Taliban had drafted the framework for an agreement that could pave the way for peace and stability in the country.

In the wake of these recent developments, there is palpable hope regarding the prospects for a peace process in Afghanistan. However, there are also considerable doubts about the prospects for long-term stability in the country, especially given the lack of accountability for alleged atrocities and war crimes.

The panel discussion will explore the prospects for stability, peace, and reconciliation in Afghanistan. It will address the following questions: What are the motives of the major players in this conflict? What role should the international community take in supporting stability and reconciliation in Afghanistan? What are the prospects for addressing accountability for atrocities and war crimes in the Afghan peace process?
