Description

The city of Doha has radically changed its appearance in the few decades since the economic and cultural boom began. Engaging world-class architects to construct structures that instantly assume an iconic status by the virtue of their unique and striking appearance has been the hallmark of the city’s development. Most of these exquisite buildings reference local culture, landscape and traditions, thus connecting to the recognizable toponyms and material culture of the region. The semiotics of these structures, although often related to traditional forms and features, do not necessarily correspond to any break with modern architecture, but rather form a category in and of themselves. Local in inspiration, individual in design and modern in appearance, these buildings contribute to the sense of a new national identity of the country and its citizens. Cultural facilities, perhaps more so than other buildings, have sought to communicate a sense of identity and self-perception, both through their contents and their architecture. This panel will focus on the role that museums and edifices of other cultural institutions in Qatar and elsewhere play in defining and conveying the national identity to local and global audiences.
